With a quick boat ride we will escape the crowds in St. Mark's Square and visit the island monastery of St. Lazarus of the Armenians. The Mechitarist order of priest/scholars has inhabited this tranquil oasis for hundreds of years, making inestimable contributions to Armenian and Venetian culture. Lord Byron spent visited the island every day for six months. learning Armenian and contributing to the first Armenian/English dictionary.  We will explore their unmatched collection of rare manuscripts, library, museum, church, and a new exhibit in their former publishing house, where they have been printing religious and cultural works in 36 languages since the 1700's. We'll also visit the beautiful gardens where they grow special roses to produce a rose marmelade every spring. Let us take you back in time, just a stone's throw from St. Mark's and the Lido.
